about
This is Tamil Sri Lankan baila song (full title - Ilankai enbathu nam thaay thiru naadu) about the beauty of the island of Lanka. This was written by AE Manoharan. The tune has a long history in baila music, which is a popular genre of dance music in Sri Lanka based on káfriinha, the traditional music and dance of Portuguese Burghers, a small minority community in Sri Lanka. Portuguese Burgher káfriinha is, in fact, a syncretic quadrille with a range of cultural and musical influences and is an important part of their identity. This version of the song is inspired by a love for the island beyond the divides of politics and nationalisms and pays homage to the Portuguese Burgher community with a verse about Batticaloa where many of them are based and the addition of the Irish Washerwoman, one of the tunes which is closely related to a káfriinha tune.
